Written to Dear Claudia

001524 Dick, Philip K. Typed Letter Signed By Philip K Dick To Claudia Bush Dated July 5 1974 (TLS) First Edition Manuscript Paper 1974 Very Good A typewritten, hand-signed letter from the science fiction author Philip K. Dick, addressed to "Dear Claudia ". Dated July 5, 1974. The letter is single-spaced spanning 2 pages. There are 62 typewritten lines plus the handwritten signature: Phil. The letter has been reprinted in "The Selected Letters of Philip K. Dick 1974" [Underwood-Miller 1991, pp. 156-57]. This is the actual typed page with the original signature, NOT THE CARBON COPY. Not only does this have his HANDWRITTEN signature (first name over typed full name), but it also shows his editing after the fact. A crossed out letter, underlining for emphasis, and an added word. In this letter, Phil writes of a recurring dream he had about a specific but unknown (to him) book. He felt he was supposed to read it, and he had been attempting to determine the title based on clues in the dreams. After three months of these dreams, he finally found the book only to find that it was the dullest book in the world. In the P.S., he comments that: you should never take your dreams too seriously. Or else it shows that the unconscious or the universe or God or whatever can put you on. Considering the age, these pages are in very nice condition. The upper left corner shows holes where the staple was removed. There is no tearing or rusting at the point of removal. The pages themselves are well preserved. There is no tearing to the edges, and minor and faint creasing from where the letter was folded and put in to the envelope. The folds are not soft, therefore the paper is not tearing or fraying. There are a few minor stains, looking like either coffee or water staining. They are faint, and there is no smearing to the typeface. In truth, a majority of the stains (6 total) are in the clear area after the P.S. of the second page. The pages are now preserved in an acid-free back with an acid-free backing board between them, making each page readable without having to remove and handle them. 001634 Dick, Philip K. Typed Letter Signed By Philip K Dick To Claudia Bush Dated November 30 1974 (TLS) First Edition Manuscript Paper 1974 Very Good A typewritten, hand-signed letter from the science fiction author Philip K. Dick, addressed to "Dear Claudia ". Dated November 30, 1974. The letter is single-spaced spanning 2 pages. There are 86 typewritten lines plus the handwritten signature: Phil, with the arrow/heart penned also. The letter has been reprinted in "The Selected Letters of Philip K. Dick 1974" [Underwood-Miller 1991, pp. 294-96]. This is the actual typed page with the original signature, NOT THE CARBON COPY. Not only does this have his HANDWRITTEN signature (first name over typed name with the heart/arrow drawing), but it also shows his editing after the fact, in the form of added writing to both pages. Seven words to the first page, and significantly more to the second. Additionally the back of page 2 has more mundane notes in pen. I believe he was writing down directions, but it's possibly written by Claudia also. In this letter, Phil continues from a previous letter. He's still trying to understand his prophetic dreams which began in March of that year. He cites John Calvin and Lewis Mumford in describing his experiences. The language in this letter gets quite vulgar at a couple of points. His humor is apparent in the closing prior to the P.S. He writes: Well I got to go because a lot of publicans and sinners, tax collectors and other riffraff abound, and I must deal with them. There is a faint stain to the upper right corner of the first page and corresponding let corner of the second. The stain is faint, but page 2 there is minor spreading of the ink from his penned writing in the margin. There is no obliteration to the words, and it's only affecting a few letters. The pages are now preserved in an acid-free back with an acid-free backing board between them, making each page readable without having to remove and handle them. Typed Letter Signed By Philip K Dick To Claudia Bush Dated January 30 1975 (TLS) First Edition Manuscript Paper 1975 Very Good A typewritten, hand-signed letter from the science fiction author Philip K. Dick, addressed to "Dear Claudia ". Dated January 30, 1975. The letter is single-spaced spanning 2 pages. There are 81 typewritten lines plus the handwritten signature: Love Phil, with the arrow/heart penned also. The letter has been reprinted in "The Selected Letters of Philip K. Not only does this have his HANDWRITTEN signature (first name with the heart/arrow drawing), but it also shows his editing after the fact in the form of ADDED handwritten text NOT published in the Underwood/Miller book (see further in this description). In this letter, Phil tells Claudia he has finally worked out his Metaphysic, and thanks her for her assistance. He also said that he sent her Thesis Introduction to the publisher for Stanislaw Lem to read, hoping it would make it to him. He claimed he couldn't send it directly to Stanislaw Lem: 'as we are not speaking, since he stole my pencil-box during recess.' Except for 8 lines, the whole second page is a dream sequence he made up of Stanislaw Lem and 'these double-domed Marxist intellectuals' discussing the introduction and his comments. This whole sequence includes dialogue between Lem and his bosses and surroundings. Page 1 has one 3 word correction hand-written by Phil, with the arrow to show where it belongs. Page 2 has a hand-written inserted sentence, with an entire act to his Dream Sequence in the bottom margin area. Signed with his first name, Phil, with the heart and arrow drawing. Considering the age, these pages are in very nice condition. The upper left corner shows holes where the staple was removed. There is no tearing so I assume a staple remover was used, and there is also no rusting. The pages themselves are well preserved. There is no tearing to the edges, and minor and faint creasing from where the letter was folded and put in to the envelope. The folds are not soft, therefore the paper is not tearing or fraying. There are 2 small stains to the upper right corner of both pages. They are faint, and there is no smearing to the typeface. The pages are now preserved in an acid-free back with an acid-free backing board between them, making each page readable without having to remove and handle them.
